  2. Today’s Super Powered Librarian!

    “It’s a bird, it’s a plane….” No, it’s a Super Powered Librarian flying to your rescue!

    Today’s Librarians are like SuperHeroes because of the nature of their ever-changing job description.  A Super Powered Librarian must be an expert in Library Science, Instruction, Technology, Personnel & Materials Management and much more.   We do it all – everyday for our students, patrons and communities.  Here are some reasons, I believe, that we put on our capes every day:

    1) We are Crusaders – Super Powered Librarians are champions for students by providing them and all stakeholders the best possible resources, reading materials and experiences.  We remain relevant by advocating for our programs in a constantly shifting environment, making connections to student learning.

    2) We are Leaders – Super Powered Librarians lead the way by changing and evolving to meet the needs of their students & community, realizing that affecting learning is paramount.

    3) We are Adventurers – Super Powered Librarians take risks and step up to the plate by implementing new programs and ideas, even when they may be unsure of the outcome.

    4) We are Flexible – Super Powered Librarians are made of elastic!  We stretch and stretch to meet the needs of all our students, school and community.

    5) We are Lifelong Learners “To Infinity & Beyond”- Super Powered Librarians Love Learning and instill that love in their students.  We spend countless hours outside the school setting planning and networking with other educators and colleagues via Twitter and other Social Media Platforms.

    Today’s Super Powered Librarian does not wear a bun (only when it’s really hot) on his/her head and sit around eating bon-bons.  Today’s Super Powered Librarians are SuperTechSavvy, SuperLeaders, SuperManagers and SuperBookPeople!  Find one at your nearest Library soon – just watch out for the cape!SuperHero Librarian Jan

  3. Gator News Hour with Safari Montage!

    At JA Hargrave Elementary, we are beginning recorded daily announcements called Gator News!  Using @SafariMontage, we are able to video students and teachers sharing the news of the day.  The actual recording is made the day prior or earlier.  They have done a great job and we are having a great time with it!  Go Gators!!

  5. I Love Being An Educator Because I Am A LifeLong Learner!

    I was one of those kids that knew I wanted to be an educator at an early age.  I have always loved teaching & learning.  Recently I was honored with being able to present 2 sessions at the Texas Computer Educators Tots & Technology Conference in Galveston, Texas.  It was a Fabulous Conference!! My presentations were well received as I shared the Basics of Twitter in Education & Managing Multiple Libraries.  I found that I did have something to share that was valuable to others. Before beginning this blog and tweeting, I wasn’t sure that I had anything to share.  I lurked and looked, then decided that I could at least follow along and encourage others. After doing this, I realized that everyone has something to share.  I may not know the extent of how my experiences have helped others, but in sharing them, they have helped me focus.  And that is one reason why I love being an educator!  Also, thanks to #moedchat (Missouri Educators) with their #showme attitude!  I am participating in a Summer Blog Challenge – So Here We Go! Let’s Learn Together!

    This year was our first #Twitter year!  I had been avoiding & dismissing Twitter mainly because I didn’t see the value of it.  And, with all the crazy #@RT, etc. I thought I would probably really mess it up and look bad… Well, thanks to the wonderful @TracieGCain & Naomi Bates @yabooksandmore and their Twitter Workshops, I was encouraged to try.  So, I began lurking, tweeting & chatting and haven’t stopped since :)!!! Because of my Twitter connections, I was able to host @Wandoo Planet and do several guest blogposts.  Also, I got a #sweet follow from #YardCrasher @ahmadandahmed 🙂  Looking forward to even more connections next year!  If you are not sure about Twitter as an Educational Resource, please give it a try!  You can just lurk, which really means “listen”, and watch other educators share resources & ideas.  Then, before you know it, you will be jumping in sharing as well.  Recently, I was asked to be one of the moderators for #txlchat next fall……and all because of #Twitter!  I continue to make valuable, relevant connections on Twitter and am looking forward to some great #txlchats.  Join me!

  7. Catching Up On This #Amazing Year!

    Just so you know, we are newbies at this blogging thing 🙂  Our blog is very new and we are learning the ins and outs through the University of  Hard Knocks along with the Trial & Error Method.  So, as you know with so much going on, it’s easy to get behind in your blogging and posting. We could either not bother with going back and just start fresh next year, or get busy and post some #amazing things that happened in our District this year.  Of course we decided to tell our Library stories.  It doesn’t matter if it happened today or a few months ago, it happened!  And that is what we want to encourage you to do – tell your Library Story.  I first heard this from an awesome Librarian @nancyjolambert.  If you are not following her, stop what you are doing and follow her on Twitter now!  Our stories need to be shared because they happened.  Let’s share our stories together!

  9. A middle school visit

    I visited one of our middle schools a week or so ago.  I was excited to see what was happening there.  Two classes were working in the library.  One had a presentation going on.  Students were interacting with the presenter who had a power point to emphasize the topic. 

    Another class worked at the computers.  Their teacher was guiding them through writing a paper for their classwork.

    Other students were in the library reading, using extra computers, and checking out books.

    The media specialist showed me a project that his student helpers were working on. The students were assisted by the media specialist and the school instructional technology teacher.   They have set up a webpage using My Big Campus and WordPress for the students to enjoy. It has links to sites for music, manga, news, science and sports.  The students are using an app called Tellegami to create avatars for their site.

    It was delightfully busy, with noise, but not disruptive.  All were doing what they needed to do!  I left with a smile on my face!

  10. Exciting Overdrive Bookmobile Visit This Year!!!
